Solar-Powered Aircraft Makes First Flight
Light weight is achieved through Heavy use of Advanced Materials
A manned solar-powered aircraft strongly supported by major materials’ companies flew for an extended period for the first time, going no higher than 4,000 ft above the Swiss countryside. Powered by 12,000 solar cells, the goal of the Solar Impulse is to fly around the world, demonstrating the feasibility of solar aircraft. Read it in Design News…
E-Flight Electric Development Continues; E-Flight Waiex to be Featured in Aviation Learning Center
The Sonex Aircraft, LLC E-Flight Initiative proof-of-concept electric-powered Waiex aircraft will be on display in the Aviation Learning Center during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2009, located on the flight line, East of the AirVenture Forums Plaza. There will be an informational update regarding the progress of E-Flight given during the “Sonex and AeroConversions E-Flight Alternative Power Research” forum held on Wednesday, July 29 at 10:00 am in EAA Forum Pavilion #11. Additionally, E-Flight design team members will be demonstrating partial power runs of the E-Flight electric Waiex in the Aviation Learning Center several times throughout the week. The E-Plane Aircraft-Family
Electric powered Aircrafts from PC-Aero
The Elektra One is environmentally friendly, because it flies without CO2 emissions. It is light and has a high end aerodynamics. Integrated are modern technologies: batteries, electric motors, solar cells and lightest fiber composite structures. In this electric airplane the latest scientific “green” findings are integrated.
The prototype of the Elektra One will be presented at the Aero in Friedrichshafen, Germany (April 2010) – at the E-Flight-Expo trade show.
NASA/CAFE “Green Prize Challenge in aeronautics”
Calin Gologan followed for decades the global development of electrical planes. Finally, a competition convinced him to start the Elektra One-project. NASA and the foundation CAFE (Comparative Aircraft Flight Efficiency, based in the USA) initiated a prize for the most energy-saving aircraft in the world. The competition – it will be held in 2011 – is called “Green Prize Challenge in aeronautics.” It is the world’s largest prize that has ever been awarded in the general aviation. It is endowed with 1.5 million U.S. dollars. This contest was ultimately decisive for Calin Gologan to fly “green” with his Elektra One.
In order to win the prize Calin Gologan has formed an international team of renowned engineers and pilots. website: www.pc-aero.de
Automotive X Prize competitors Arrive at MIS
28 teams representing 36 super-fuel-efficient vehicles began arriving at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn to start on-track performance testing for the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize.
The event is a multi-million dollar competition designed to inspire a new generation of viable, production-capable, and super fuel-efficient vehicles that exceed 100 miles per gallon or its energy equivalent.
Established automakers, start-ups, universities, inventors, and even a high school are among the diverse groups of teams representing 14 U.S. states and nine countries. These teams are now one step closer to their share of the $10 million prize purse, to be awarded this September to those that survive the rigorous multi-stage competition. Read about it at GLITR…
