By 2025, the Renewable Energy sector has the potential to produce 1/4th of the projected energy needs of the US, according to a report by the Prometheus Institute. This represents about 635 gigawatts (GW) of new energy capacity, and is dependent on a number of favorable factors and government policies. A number of renewable energy experts contributed to the report, and provided a consensus that indecisive government support for renewables has been detrimental to the advancement of renewable technologies. The report recommends the United States develop a comprehensive strategy to become a global leader in the RE industry.
